Description
This course will jump start your American Sign Language journey by learning the basics of this visual language and exploring the Deaf culture. Get ready to broaden your concept of communication through connections and comparisons to your own culture and community.
Major Topics and Concepts
SEGMENT 1
Module 1:
- discuss the development of deaf schools and educational philosophies
- learn about the development and use of technology to assist with Deaf life
- learn signs for common words and phrases relating to home and school
- practice presentational communication by planning and presenting a description of your home and discussion of favorite school subjects
Module 2:
- discuss the development of deaf schools and educational philosophies
- learn about the development and use of technology to assist with Deaf life
- learn signs for common words and phrases relating to home and school
- practice presentational communication by planning and presenting a description of your home and discussion of favorite school subjects
Module 3:
- learn about the development and use of technology to assist with Deaf life
- learn signs for common words and phrases relating to time
- practice interpretive and interpersonal communication by interpreting an explanation, then
- planning and presenting a response to the questions asked
Module 4:
- discuss Deaf dining behaviors and communication
- learn about motion and facial grammar
- learn signs for common words and phrases relating to food, restaurants, and money
- practice interpretive and interpersonal communication by ordering from a menu and asking for a check
SEGMENT 2
Module 5:
- learn signs for common words and phrases related to the weather, plants, animals, and seasons
- discuss how the Deaf culture refers to and describes sounds (animal sounds, thunder, etc.)
- compare two different environments or objects using classifiers
- practice presentational communication by planning and presenting a narrative
Module 6:
- learn signs for common words and phrases related to places in a community, activities, entertainment, various occupations, and clothing
- learn about various clubs, sports and leisure activities in the Deaf community
- compare two different environments or objects using classifiers
- learn phrases, signs, and nonverbal techniques used in Deaf storytelling
- plan and practice interpersonal, presentational, and interpretive communication by participating in a conversation about personal interests and analyzing and summarizing a story or song
Module 7:
- plan a trip and sequence events
- talk and write about planning for a trip
- make suggestions and request information for safe travel
- make recommendations for sightseeing
- plan and practice presentational communication to present a trip itinerary including locations, dates, times, and forms of transportation
